Raised on the rocky coast of bucolic Maine, Joshua's interests and his perspective are rooted in his connection to the coast. Before coming to Duke, he spent three years in the Northwest where he worked for federal agencies involved in salmon conservation on the Columbia River. As a Master’s candidate at the Nicholas School of the Environment, Joshua hopes to continue to learn about regional fisheries and better understand how these fisheries and their associated conservation efforts overlap. After graduation, he plans to work with rural fishing communities; working to maintain the viability of our ecological and cultural landscape.

President - Eddie Farrell

Eddie Farrell is a native of Cape May, NJ. He earned his B.S. in Biology at Rowan University (Glassboro, NJ). While growing up in Cape May and during his college years Ed spent most of his time fishing for fun or working as 1st mate on board charter boats. Recently, he earned his USCG Captain’s License and uses it to charter and commercial fish along the east coast. His research interests at Duke are distribution and ecology of pelagic fish, and marine fisheries policy/management.

Vice-president - Elena Finkbeiner

Elena graduated from the University of California, Santa Cruz with a B.S. in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and now attends The Nicholas School of the Environment at Duke University, with a concentration in Coastal Environmental Management. She has been active in sea turtle conservation since undergrad and recently has expanded her interest to sustainable fisheries and bycatch. This summer she will study community perception and involvement in a sea turtle ecotourism project in several small fishing villages throughout Baja California. She will also be involved in writing a global sea turtle bycatch assessment with Conservation International, Oceana and Duke's Project Global.

Secretary - Jennie Dean

Jennie Dean is interested in pursuing a career at the intersection of legislators and scientists to facilitate effective ocean conservation programs. This summer she is working with The Nature Conservancy at the Nags Head Wood office on several projects including the use of oyster reef restoration to mitigate the consequences of rising seas and the effects of drainage ditches on the ecosystem of the Alligator River Refuge.

Treasurer - Daylin Muñoz-Nuñez

Daylin Muñoz-Nuñez is from Cuba where she obtained her bachelor degree in Biology/Marine Biology from the University of Havana in 2001. She has worked on sea turtle nesting beach conservation projects in Cuba, as well as studying coral reef fish communities and assessing environmental impact of tourism in the coastal zone. Daylin's main career interests are conservation of marine natural resource while empowering and involving local coastal communities in the management of these resources. During her summer internship she will be involved on a project to assess the status of the fisheries management in Cuba at Environmental Defense Fund in Raleigh, NC.

Durham Liaison - Wendy Goyert

Wendy Goyert was born in Connecticut but grew up in Latin America and Martha's Vineyard, MA. She's always been drawn to the ocean, and loves to sail and scuba dive. Before coming to Duke, she worked for 7 years at The Nature Conservancy, and is looking forward to working with fishermen up in the Gulf of Maine this summer to promote sustainable fisheries practices. Her career interests include community-based fisheries management, international development, and promoting sustainable seafood.

Historian - Katherine McGlade

Katherine McGlade's primary interest is fisheries policy. This summer she will visit Papua New Guinea, Micronesia, Palau, and Alaska and will be meeting with people in the fisheries industry. She comes to Duke after a successful career in commercial real estate development in the greater New York City area.
